Description
Smugglers Lookout is a spacious 1800's property just a few paces from the beach. It benefits from being in the heart of the historic and charming Port of Looe, yet being at the quieter end offering complete peace, but close to superb restaurants and shops. No through traffic disturbs guests. Sympathetically restored, it offers the ambience of a bygone age combined with modern conveniences of a fully fitted kitchen and bathrooms. No less than three 1800's fireplaces were revealed during the restoration. The beach, literally just a few seconds from the door, is a splendid place to take your morning walks with lots of seating on the prom to watch the colourful boats go by and get lost in your dreams!
After flowing calmly down a wide valley, with trees hanging their branches into the smooth, wide waters, the Looe river is suddenly confined between rounded hills as it enters the sea. In that narrow pass, the Cornish have planted not 1 town, but 2, the Looes, East & West. East Looe is the larger, a labyrinth of narrow and crooked streets running back beside the river from a glorious beach. A fine bridge of seven arches joins East & West Looe and old houses wander up the hillsides in Riviera fashion. Under those hills, East Looe sits peacefully sunning itself, looking across the lovely Whitesand Bay to Rame Head. Looe was once said to be so quaint, as to be almost a fairytale, yet sufficiently developed to offer guests every possible amenity. A glorious panorama of cliffs will satisfy the deck-chair loungers or excite walkers.
The sitting room is open plan with dining table and chairs, exposed stone walls, planked floors, original beams and a wonderful log burner. Antique and country style furniture is enjoyed throughout, or new where appropriate. The fitted kitchen offers cooker, washing machine, fridge and microwave. It also offers four bedrooms, comprising Venice Antique style beds. The 2 main bedrooms have views across to the seafront and out to sea. The bathroom offers a choice of bath or shower, and there is a 2nd shower room also, each complete with WC and wash basin.
East Looe offers guided tours of its charming narrow streets and tumbling cottages, C16th Guildhall Museum and cruises along the rugged coastline to the unspoilt Looe Island, with its C12th monastic cells. There is a huge choice of restaurants and Inns a couple of minutes walk away with friendly atmospheres, besides bakers, grocers and fresh fish stalls, charming and unique shops abound.
Smugglers Lookout comfortably sleeps 2-8 People.
We also have Harbourside Hideaway in Polperro which sleeps 2 – 6 people and Bluebells in Penpillick which sleeps 2-8 people. |

Looe is a small fishing port and village in the South East of Cornwall, divided in two by the River Looe which runs through East Looe and West Looe, which are connected by a bridge across the river. With sandy beaches, a number of interesting shops and restaurants, fishing trips and regular boat rides, there is much to interest the visitor and plenty to keep folk returning year after year.
Although Looe’s primary business today is tourism, there are a still a good number of local fish dealers bringing in daily catches which are renowned for their quality. Looe has also become something of a centre for shark fishing, the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain having its home here. Nevertheless the influence of tourism in the town is obvious, given the amount of accommodation available, along with gift shops, restaurants, ice cream parlours and, of course, bakeries selling Cornish pasties!
East Looe is notable both for its sandy beach and for the fish dealers who operate on the quay along the estuary. There is an unsual pier called the Banjor Pier and it is on this side of the river that the Looe Valley branch line has its terminus station, providing convenient rail access to the area. Across the river is West Looe, which, like East Looe, has a good number of shops and restaurants. The road through here heads off to the popular fishing village of Polperro – an essential visit if you’re in the area.
There are a number of attractions within driving distance, including Woolly monkey sanctuary, Cotehele, Lanhydrock House, and of course Looe is a great place to visit if you want to fish, dive, walk the coastal path or simply relax on the beach. With Go2’s wide selection of holiday lets in and around Looe, including cottages and accommodation in various holiday parks, you’ll find plenty of choice of where to stay, in what is one of Cornwall’s finest resorts.
